ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bio

Chelsea received her BA in Art Education, Art History, and Studio Art from Appalachian State University and her Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is currently pursuing her MFA from MICA.  She has taught art with Room 13 International in Scotland, led after school art programming in Charlotte, NC, and now teaches art at the middle school level and lives in Baltimore, MD. Her educational philosophy is rooted in the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) pedagogy which asserts that the child is the artist and the art room is their studio.

Her prints, photography, and multimedia artworks  have been exhibited around the country including the Nth Gallery in Boone, NC, Penland School of Craft in Penlands, NC  and the Quiet Waters Gallery in Annapolis, MD.

Artist Statement

I am curious about what we are made up of, what constitutes us, as well as what leaves us and what is left when it leaves. I am interested in drawing out the idiosyncrasies of the mundane, as well as the moments that break us from it. I notice spontaneous presentations of the world that speak to me, then translate and re-present them to others through a variety of media, connecting the threads of chance and purpose.

My work is multidisciplinary. I gravitate to photography and video for immediate documentation, and then explore confluences of coincidence and intentionality through a variety of drawing, painting, and printmaking processes. My recent experimentations with reassembly, carving, pin-poking, and embroidering on drawings have opened new paths for addition and subtraction from a subject.
